Traveling with Purpose on the Garden Isle

Traveling with Purpose on the Garden Isle

Volunteer at one of Kauai’s Farms

Kauai, known as the "Garden Isle" of Hawaii, is not only a stunning destination for visitors but also offers various volunteering opportunities. Engaging in volunteer work allows visitors to connect with the local community, contribute to meaningful projects, and leave a positive impact on the island. Here are six of our favorite Kauai visitor volunteer opportunities:

1. Environmental clean up
2. Lend a farmer a hand
3. Puppy beach day
4. Build a hale (house)
5. Work with a community nonprofit
6. Share your art

More Than a Walk on the Beach

Kauai boasts unique and delicate ecosystems. We have several organizations focusing on preserving and restoring the island's natural beauty. Opportunities include beach cleanups, tree planting, and invasive species removal. Check with our local Surfrider Foundation chapter and Hui O Laka Kokee for scheduled events.

    Calling all Farmhands!

Get some dirt under your nails while contributing to our local food sustainability efforts. Volunteering at one of our Kauai farms provides an opportunity to learn about tropical, regenerative agriculture practices while helping grow fresh produce for the community. Malama Kauai and @OldKoloaRegenerativeFarm often organize monthly community work events.

    Get Your Puppy Fix

Missing your pooch while on vacation? The Kauai Humane Society offers a dog for a day program. This wildly popular initiative matches island guests with a compatible, four-legged companion to take on car rides, puppuccinos, and beach romps. Kibble, water, and puppy snacks are provided. The hope is your new fur friend will have its love cup filled while being exercised. Even better if you find her a forever home!

    Swing a Hammer in Paradise

Habitat for Humanity is always looking for a wide scope of volunteers. If your family would like to spend a day immersed in our local community, try reaching out to help paint, hammer, landscape, or assist with job-site clean-up at one of our housing locations. Kauai’s local families will be very grateful for the helping hand.

A Day in the Taro Patch

The Waipa Foundation hosts monthly workdays that vary based on the needs of the moment. One month they may need help harvesting taro, other months the immense garden needs weeding and planting. At the end of the day, the Waipa team always serves a magnificent lunch. Another favorite foundation is Aina Hookupu O Kilauea. Help feed this small, north shore community by volunteering in their community garden. Volunteers assemble each Tuesday and Saturday to keep the vast garden thriving. After a few hours of garden work, everyone leaves with a box of freshly harvested veggies… not a bad day!

    Share Your Talent

Are you a dance educator, gymnast, or a rare breed of chef who enjoys talking with the public? Contact one of our local dance studios and offer to teach a short clinic. Our local youth would love to learn something new from a mainlander. One of our favorite dance studios is the Koloa Dance House. Here at the Provisions Kitchen, we are always looking to host innovative chefs interested in sharing their skills. Send us an introductory email and we will happily share our compensation plan!

Are you feeling inspired to give back?

Before volunteering, it's crucial to reach out to organizations in advance, inquire about their volunteer programs, and understand any requirements or commitments. Additionally, respecting our local culture and environment is essential while engaging in volunteer activities on the beautiful island of Kauai. We hope you can fit one of these meaningful activities into your next Kauai Vacation!
